Iris reticulata is the best known of the miniature iris species, originating from Turkey, the Caucasus, Northern Iraq and Iran. Being compact means they are great for containers, usually reaching only around 10-15cm tall and are also great for borders, rockeries and patio displays. The sweetly fragrant flowers are distinctively striking and are available in shades of blue to violet to purple, usually with yellow crests and white streaks on the falls. Plant bulbs 8-10cm deep in clumps for a wonderful early spring display. They enjoy a semi shaded position, with adequate moisture. In order to insure consistent flowering from year to year, consider planting supplemental bulbs each autumn, or grow as an annual by planting new bulbs each year.
