A justly popular cultivar of the mountain clematis, Clematis montana var. rubens Tetrarose is a large, vigorous, deciduous climber, not quite as enormous as some montana clematis. The stems are reddish brown, and the tripartite leaves are an interesting bronzed green. From late spring to early summer the plant is covered with scented, four-sepalled flowers in a rich mauve-pink with golden centres. Substantial support is necessary. No regular pruning is required, but cut back to a pair of healthy buds after planting to encourage multiple stems. Keep the roots shaded. Clematis Tetrarose holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
