This purpley, bronze version of Dodonaea viscosa, was first found around 1890 in Marlborough. It grows into a bushy, small shrub or tree that can get to around 4 x 2 m wide. The purple leaf colour can get more intense over the winter. Flowers are followed by large, red seed capsules over summer.

Dodonaea viscosa enjoys a sunny or part shade spot in free draining soil. It as suitable for dry areas, can handle an exposed position, including coastal gardens. New growth responds well to a teim, but avoid pruning old wood if possible. Lower branches can be removed to create a clear-trunk of desired. The leaf colour is deeper when planted in poor soil.

Dodonaea viscosa makes for an interesting specimen tree with attractive bark, beautiful purple foliage, reddish purple seed capsules and, in particular in very windy areas, an irregularly shaped canopy. Excellent choice for hedging purposes in coastal gardens. Cut stems with foliage and seed capsules add an unusual dimension to floral arrangements.
