This selection of Metrosideros excelsa was sourced by Graeme Platt in 1983, after it was discovered growing at the north western end of Rangitoto Island, under the lighthouse there.
'Lighthouse' has a more upright and tighter, compact form than normal Pohutakawa. It has the same dark, rich, green, oval-shaped leaves and rough dark brown bark.
It produces brilliant sprays of bright red flowers through summer, usually before Christmas that are thought to be bigger than standard M. excelsa blooms. Can grow to around 5x3m after 10 years.
