Named the 'South Island Kowhai' but is found in many parts of lowland NZ. Masses of golden yellow flowers herald the arrival of spring and are sought after by birds. Has divaricating juvenile habit.
Develops gracefully arching and spreading branches with small leaves. Golden-yellow flowers attract nectar-seeking birds. Grow in sun or semi-shade. Avoid very dry sites. Looks lovely sited overlooking water. Flowers from late-winter to mid-spring. Sophora microphylla is evergreen and native to New Zealand. After 10 years, it should be reaching 6 x 5m. Can grow to a mature height of 25m if allowed.
