Bougainvillea Bambino 'Krishna' is a woody perennial climbing vine with showy large mauve bracts. Bambino Bougainvilleas are smaller cultivars, and are tough and hardy plants. They are evergreen in warm moist conditions, but can be deciduous if there is a dry season.
Bougainvilleas will grow over anything that will give the sturdy stems support, from trees, verandahs, fences and trelisses. They can also be grown as plants that will spill down over banks and walls. Small varieties can be grown as pendulous ornamentals, and they can be trimmed and trained as standard plants. Different varieties have different growth rates, from slow to very rapid. One problem with bougainvilleas can be the long sharp thorns, which can make pruning a chore. The thorns also need to be considered for the siting of the plant, so that they don't become a hazard. There are varieties with fewer and smaller thorns.
Bougainvilleas are best suited to warm, frost free areas, and can flower all year round in tropical climates. They are drought tolerant once established, and too much water can set back their growth. They like a sunny postion and regular fertiliser. They can be grown in a partial shaded postion, but this may decrease the flowering somewhat.
