Ah, Taupata.
A wonderful, robust, impenetrable shrub that can handle any situation. The super glossy green leaves are salt resistant, meaning this plant is perfect for anywhere in Wellington. It can potentially get knocked by frost, but bounces back super quick.
Taupata is a great 'filler plant', slotting into any gap, it can be used to form a hedge, or better yet, as a shelter plant that can protect your less hardy plants. Inconspicuous flowers soon form bright orange fruit that all birds will guzzle, drawing them onto your garden to much delight. However, it can seed very easily as a result, so be prepared for lots of seedlings popping up all over the show. They aren't hard to remove, but will grow into a shrub/tree if allowed.
The habit of this species can vary markedly depending on the situation. In exposed locations, such as cliffs, it assumes a more prostrate habit, while in more sheltered areas it can grow as a small tree up to 8 meters in height. Taupata is very versatile indeed.
Excellent coastal plant that can handle wind no problem.
