A medium to tall tree, The Golden Elm, Ulmus procera “Louis van Houtte” can reach around 10-15m in height. Foliage is a pale lime green turning to a buttery golden yellow in autumn. Very attractive shape as the tree matures and the light colored foliage adds contrast and interest through the year.

This is a very versatile deciduous shade tree for larger gardens, parks and street plantings. It grows well in poor soils, tolerates both dry and damp conditions, and requires only a little extra water during long dry summers.

Growing to a nice rounded shape with a spreading crown after starting with a fairly upright habit. A few other strong points are the ability to withstand windy positions and its tolerance of air pollution.

Ulmus procera Louis van Houtte is best planted in an open position where it can be allowed to grow and have the crown fill out to its full potential. Suited to a humus rich soil and in very dry conditions may require extra water during summer, especially when young.

The tree is similar in many respects to Ulmus glabra ‘lutescens’ howeve, most think it is a better colour.

The root system is strong, so plant away from buildings.
